Jersey Day – April 12 – Wear a jersey in support for the Humboldt Broncos #jerseysforhumboldt

Menno Place wants to show our support to the families of Humboldt Broncos. They are currently going through a tragedy that no family or community should experience. Many of our staff know and understand what it is like to put a child on a bus and pray for their safe travels. This tragedy has impacted Canadian lives in a way that will not be forgotten from our national memory.

On Thursday April 12, 2018 Menno Place staff will wear our Jerseys / sports shirts to show our support and send our love.

Please join us in supporting these families. Wear your Jersey to school, work, anywhere you go!

Survey – Measuring Psychological Health and Safety (PHS) in Healthcare – Quality Improvement Initiative

Coming next week – your input via online survey is requested (April 11 – 25)!

Menno Place has been confirmed as a participant organization in a pilot study for the Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC). Together with the By Health, For Health Collaborative and  HealthCareCAN, Menno Place is committed to broadening the awareness and importance of workplace psychological health and safety within the healthcare sector across Canada.

Our staff will voluntarily be participating in an anonymous online survey between April 11 and April 25th. This brief, confidential online survey will ask healthcare staff to provide their perspective on the psychosocial risk factors within their workplace.

What is involved in the online survey?

  • Takes 10 – 15 minutes to complete.
  • All staff are encouraged to participate – your voice matters!
  • Your feedback in this area is critical. We recognize that there are psychological health and safety risks within the long-term / senior care sector. We want to hear from you about this!
  • Participation is voluntary. All information in the survey is confidential. No personal information will be gathered. Analysis of the survey will be summarized with no identifying information included.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is this a research study?

A: This project is a quality improvement or quality assurance project that will be used to benefit our workplace and workforce. Such activities are not defined as research and therefore do not require the same type of review and approval as research studies.

Q: What kind of information will be collected?

A: The survey items ask you about your perceptions of various factors that impact the psychological safety of the workplace. The questions are based on the
recognition that you are an expert on what it is like to do your job in your work environment. The questions are not about your physical health or mental illness and no personal information is gathered.

Q: How are privacy and confidentiality ensured?

A: In order to ensure confidentiality and privacy, Vancouver Psych Health and Safety Consulting will collect and analyze the survey results. Your answers
are anonymous and no one from our organization will be able to see or access individual responses. Only aggregate results will be reported to our organization. If fewer than ten people in a particular group respond, this group will not be analyzed or reported.

Q: How secure is the data?

A: All survey response data will be stored during this project on an independent, highly secure and FIPPA compliant Canadian server. Data is stored in a de-identified format so that no one will have access to identifiable information.

Q: Is completion of the survey voluntary?

A: Yes, completion of the survey is completely voluntary. A high level of completion by all staff will provide us with more accurate information about the
psychological health and safety of our workplace.

Q: How will completion of this survey help me and my healthcare colleagues?

A: This information will be helpful in two ways. The results for our organization will let us know about areas of strength or concern that influence the psychological health and safety of our workplace. The information from all the organizations that are participating in the project will be used to create a database and improve the survey so that it is helpful for all staff in Canadian healthcare organizations.

Q: Can the online survey be completed on any device?

A: Yes, you will receive a link to the survey that can be accessed on a computer, tablet or smart phone. Please note that you will be asked to complete
all the questions. Also, you will not be able to stop and save your responses and return later, so please allow sufficient time to give this your full attention.

Q: Will the results of the survey be shared with staff?

A: Yes, once the survey is closed and the results analyzed, we will be receiving a summary report from the consultants (PH+S) – Psychological Health and Safety Consulting. This aggregate report will describe our results on fifteen factors that impact psychological health and safety in healthcare in comparison to national norms, where available. These results will be shared with staff in a timely fashion by way of our internal communication processes.

Flu period extended indefinitely

Dr. Henry of the BCCDC (BC Centre for Disease Control) has extended the flu period indefinitely.

This means that the flu protocol is still in effect and staff who have not had the flu shot are required to continue wearing the mask. We will notify you when the flu period is over.

Please remind visitors that the flu protocol is still in effect.

PointClickCare – Point of Care – Launching in the Hospital – Launched in the Home

April 2018 marks the onboarding month for Menno Hospital’s Point of Care software launch. This launch took place last year in Menno Home.

This person-centered platform provides a holistic view to all involved in care delivery for our residents.

Greater intelligence, shared knowlege and access to all care partners results in confident decision-making and accurate care planning. Care and service plans revolve around the resident, which means that we deliver the highest quality of care, we mitigate risk, ensure compliance and strengthen relationships.

Thank you to all of the staff who have spearheaded this tranisition from paper-based documentation to electronic documentation – thanks to Sandra Ramsey who has customized the software for our use in Menno Home and Menno Hospital. We also thank Trish Giesbrecht, Manager of Care, Hospital for her leadership and vision for the use of this software for our residents. Both Sandra and Trish attended The Summit, 2018 in November to take in education and vision for how this software can improve our care and documentation here in residential care.

A special thanks in the Hospital goes to Heidi Hildebrandt who has gone above and beyond (and will be doing so this month!) to facilitate the practical use of this software with the care teams.

As you know, our care teams are using hand-held devices to record their care services and to document in real-time. This is an exciting transition. The accuracy is incredible and the sharing of information is beyond what we have ever been able to have in the past. This will ensure quality of care for our residents and consistency regardless of who is caring for them.

What an exciting time this is! Please continue to encourage each other as we move into this new technology and as we serve our residents in this way. Let the families know about this transition so that they can join in the excitement and support you in your work.

Celebrate Increased Hours in Menno Home

It’s time to celebrate!

Menno Home has received an increase in HPRD (Hours Per Resident Day)! This is a historic and much hoped-for increase that will allow more care for residents each day!

The BC Provincial government has a plan to get all long-term care homes to 3.36 HPRD. This is an initiative that has long been desired and advocated from the long-term care sector.

Menno Home will see an increase in HPRD to 2.95 HPRD for 157 residents and 3.36 for 39 residents (E1).

Menno Hospital has been at 3.37 HPRD for several years and will not see any change.

Special thanks goes to the Menno Home Care Aides for their assistance and cooperation during this time of transition.

Thank you to the Staffing Office for their work in calling out and adjusting the hours/positions. Special thanks to Hilde Wiebe, Joanne Rankin, Karin Schroeder and the Schedule Committee.

Menno Home will see the increased staff on Wednesday, March 21st. There will be a job fair in April and the new rotations will begin in early May.

Thank you to everyone for your continued involvement and cooperation as we adjust to the increased support available to our residents in Menno Home!
