John has been at Menno Place for six months, serving as a chaplain. His ministry here in this short time has been incredible.
We asked John a few questions this week to get to know him better…
Q: Why do you enjoy working at Menno Place?
A: Menno Place is the most amazing place I’ve ever worked, with awesome staff and wonderful residents. Working here is an honor. And God lives here, with his presence, peace, and blessing.
Q: What is the most important lesson you’ve learned in the last year?
A: There is nothing I can do to make God love me more, there is nothing I can do to make God love me less.
Q: Who knows you best in the whole world?
A: My lovely wife, who loves me in spite of me.
Q: Do you collect anything?
A; All things brass, especially bells. I love the various sounds of brass. And wooden carvings of old men, each reflecting a character I can identify with. All purchased used, with lots of character.
Q: What is your favorite family recipe?
A: Homemade bread, just like moms. I grew up baking bread with mom. Now I bake too but use a no-knead recipe. Just mix flour, water, yeast, and salt. Let it rise overnight, then bake it fresh for breakfast. With butter.
Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would you go?
A: Germany, where we lived as missionaries, to visit friends and places we love.
Q: What’s the last book you read?
A: I’m reading 3 books at once:
A More Christlike God, by Brad Jersak – Rethinking our theology according to the life of Christ.
Prayer: Finding the heart’s true home, by Richard J. Foster – Describing the many ways to pray.
The Salvation of Jasch Siemens by Armin Wiebe. Mennonite humor from Yantzeed.
