The Passing Quilt Ceremony is one of the ways we honour and dignify a resident who has passed by covering them with a handmade quilt as they are moved from their room to the funeral transport van. We are looking for staff volunteers to be trained in how to lead this ceremony in the event that a chaplain is not available. There is a particular need for volunteers over the holidays. We want to ensure that no resident goes without this care.
Here’s where you can help:
We are opening up the leadership of this Passing Quilt Ceremony to staff who are interested in ensuring that all residents are given this honour and dignity when they pass away. This opportunity is available for staff from any discipline who are given recommendation and flexibility in their work schedule by their supervisor. We are hoping to have 3-4 people sign up from each unit or apartment building. If there are more, that will be an incredible blessing.
There three upcoming opportunities to be trained. Each session is from 3:15 – 4:00pm in the Menno Hospital Chapel. You only need to attend one session to be qualified to lead.
The next dates are:
- November 30
- December 6
- December 7
Although the passing quilt ceremony is a simple ceremony to lead with clear written instructions, it is has a profound impact as we say good-bye to our precious residents.
