Dale’s blog as he travels by bike to raise awareness about dementia

The last few days seem like distant memory now that I am sitting in a warm coffee shop in Moose Jaw, having had a shower and fixing my first flat of the trip.

I left Carlyle at 6:30 after a free breakfast of cheese omelette and hashbrowns. Arrived in Forget SK at 9:30 to find the town deserted. Forget was one of my “places” to visit as it is listed as one of the top ten unique places in Canada. Someone apparently forgot to tell Forget! I sat on the steps of the Happy Nun wondering what time it opened when a car pulled up. The lady told me: tommorrow. It seems the main attraction to one of the most unique places is only open two days a week. To her credit, the owner did offer to make me a coffee but I did not want to impose and was on my way.

stopped somewhere (can’t remember the name) for lunch which also consisted of.. omelette and hashbrowns. Not much vegetarian selection in rural Sask.

fought moderate headwinds most of the day and watched storms pass by me to the south.

Why is Dale Carlisle riding his bike across Canada to raise awareness for dementia?

He wants to invite everyone at Menno Place, including staff, volunteers and families to learn more about positive strategies that help caregivers, friends, coworkers and family members of people who have dementia. Besides working as a Rehabilitation Therapist and dealing with seniors everyday, Dale recently observed a friend who was changing behaviours. This friend was diagnosed with early-onset dementia. With his friend in mind, Dale is eager to spread the news of the Dementia Friends Canada program.

Menno Place has just offered our friendship to the 747,000 Canadians living with dementia, and we’d like to invite you to do the same.

It’s called Dementia Friends Canada. It’s a national movement dedicated to building awareness and support for people living with dementia.

Simply click the button below to visit the website and watch the short video to learn a little bit about dementia and a few simple actions you can take to support those living with the disease. Once you’ve finished the video, registering to become a Dementia Friend is fast and easy.
