RESPONSIBLILTY

  • Can you describe your health and safety responsibilities?
    • Protect my health and safety and the health and safety of others
    • Follow established safe work procedures
    • Use protective equipment, devices and clothing
    • Don’t engage in horseplay
    • Report unsafe conditions, equipment and acts
    • Don’t work under the influence of alcohol or drugs
    • Don’t come to work or operate equipment without enough sleep or rest
    • Work with the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee
    • Cooperate with WorkSafe BC
  • Is there a process to ensure that contractors are meeting their health and safety obligations?
    • Yes, they sign a Health and Safety contract before working on the Menno Place campus

PPE & EQUIPMENT

  • When workers are required to use Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), have they been trained in the use, maintenance and limitations of it?
    • Yes, there is training in orientation. Managers train their staff in the use of Protective Protection Equipment
  • Do you know what to do if you encounter broken or defective equipment?
    • Use the tag-out process to have the equipment moved or repaired

EDUCATION

  • Does the employer have a formal orientation?
    • Yes, this happens for all new staff, all newly-transferred employees and all who are returning after a lengthy absence
  • Are written safe work procedures readily available to workers?
    • Yes, they are available in each department and through SharePoint

EMERGENCY

  • Do you know how to contact first aid?
    • Yes, through training in orientation and signage on OHS bulletin boards
  • Has training been given to employees who have a lead in an emergency?
    • Yes. We have regular emergency training drills for leaders and team members

REPORTING

  • Is there a system for you to report unsafe / unhealthy conditions or practices?
  • Do you know how to report an incident or an accident?
    • Yes. Complete Near Miss or Incident Report

LEADERSHIP

  • Are managers and supervisors leading by example?
    • Yes. This is an expectation for all on the Menno Place campus.
  • Are corrective actions communicated to workers?
    • Yes. Recommendations for corrective actions are brought to the Joint Health and Safety Committee. Responses are recorded in the Joint and Health Safety minutes for all to see.
