Infection Control: Gastroenteritis

Gastroenteritis (GI)

GI symptoms are usually nausea, vomiting and watery diarrhea. You may also have stomach cramps or a fever.

These are commonly caused by:

  • Virus: Norovirus
  • One of the most common causes; are found in the stool or vomit of infected people
    This virus is easily spread from person to person
  • Bacteria: Clostridium difficile (C. Diff)

Action:

Implement Contact Precautions

IF VOMITING

Add Droplet Precautions

Preventative tips:

  • Wash hands with soap and water frequently and for at least 20 seconds. hand sanitizing gel may not be as effective as soap and water for killing some of these viruses.
  • Wash fruits and vegetables before preparing and eating, and thoroughly cook shellfish.
