HOME W2: OUTBREAK (declared 16/02/2022)

NEW COVID POSITIVE CASES = 0 resident

TOTAL COVID POSITIVE CASES =31 residents (since Feb. 8/22)

We are so pleased that there have been NO further COVID positive cases in the past 2 days. All but one of the residents have recovered from COVID. In our daily meeting with the Fraser Health Outbreak Lead, we discussed the possibility of residents who have recovered from COVID being taken off of isolation and droplet precaution. This was brought forward to the Medical Health Officer who has approved this, effective immediately. Residents on the north side of the unit who are symptomatic (0), have active cases of COVID (1) or who are recovered (17) will be no longer be in isolation. Those who have not contracted COVID will remain on droplet precaution / isolation. We are anticipating that this unit will be called off Outbreak if there are no new COVID cases in the next 48 hours. This is a hopeful possibility. At this time, only essential visitors are permitted.
Protocols:
  • Twice daily symptom screening for staff and residents
  • All residents isolated and on droplet precaution
  • Communal dining discontinued
  • Group activities discontinued
  • Staff to wear masks and goggles until further notice
  • Only essential visitors allowed.

UPDATES AND REPORTING:

With the high prevalence of COVID in the community, Fraser Health introduced new Scenarios for Protocols. This has impacted the complexity of reporting residents and staff who are COVID positive. As a result, we have made some changes to reporting:

  1. In the initial outbreaks, all COVID positive cases (both staff and residents) could be easily traced to the outbreak as the source of transmission. During this wave of Omicron, it is nearly impossible to do contact tracing with staff as it relates to transmission on the unit. With this in mind, we will no longer be reporting staff COVID positive cases unless they are the initial cases on the unit.
  2. The various scenarios for protocols have added layers of complexity to when the “beginning” of a COVID outbreak takes place. You will notice that there is a jump in the number of COVID positive residents on Home W2 today as we are now reporting not only how many residents have become COVID positive since the declaration of the outbreak, but also since the initial Scenario was declared. Our goal continues to be that we provide accurate and meaningful reports to you in order to clearly express the significance and ongoing nature of COVID positives on a unit.
  3. Unless an Outbreak is declared or ends, we will no longer be reporting on weekends. You can continue to expect updates Monday – Friday.

Do you still need a FIT test for an N-95? Clinics next week – check out the times

N-95 FIT testing

Who needs to be FIT tested? All staff who work in a unit that could be declared on outbreak. This is for dietary, housekeeping, maintenance, chaplains, care staff – ALL staff who may be required to work on an outbreak unit.

When do we wear N-95’s? These masks will be made available when the Medical Health Officer requires them. This is most likely during an outbreak.

Can I wear an N-95 if I haven’t been FIT tested? No. You need to have the FIT test to ensure that the mask will effectively keep you safe.

What is an N-95 FIT test? A “fit test” tests the seal between the respirator’s facepiece and your face. It takes about 15-20 minutes to complete and should be performed at least annually. After passing a fit test with a respirator, you must use the exact same make, model, style, and size respirator on the job to ensure a proper fit.

Why get your booster shot?

Booster shot for healthcare workers

The booster dose of vaccine is available to ALL healthcare workers 6 months after their 2nd dose of vaccine. This vaccination is another one of the enhanced protections measures, aimed at limiting the spread of the COVID virus in long-term care, seniors’ assisted living and congregate living settings in order to protect residents and staff.

From the BC Ministry of Health:

“Our health care workers have stood at the frontline against COVID-19 for the past two years. Their dedication during this global pandemic has been remarkable. They have shown their outstanding commitment in so many different ways, such as adopting enhanced infection prevention and control measures, explaining the evolving COVID-19 protocols to patients, residents and family members, and promptly receiving their full COVID-19 vaccine series. For this, we thank you.”

Why should healthcare workers get the booster shot?

  1. Lower Risk of severe COVID: It lowers your risk of hospitalization from COVID (severe COVID) – CLICK HERE to see the risk chart.
  2. Robust Protection from COVID: Getting the recommended booster dose ensures you continue to get a robust protection against COVID-19 and its many variants of concern, for a longer period of time.
  3. Protecting yourself, saving lives: By getting your booster, you are protecting yourself, you are saving lives, lowering the risk of spreading COVID-19, and choosing to participate in the sustained protection for everyone.
  4. Protecting vulnerable residents: The people you work with are some of the most vulnerable to the disease. Older people and those with chronic health conditions have a significantly increased risk of developing severe illness, complications, and dying from COVID-19.
  5. Reduces risk of infection: Emerging evidence from the UK, Scotland, Denmark and England is showing that a booster dose reduces the risk of infection and of symptomatic infection. There is also emerging evidence from Denmark of a reduction in household transmission when a sick member in the household is boosted.
  6. Reduces risk of transmission: Recent data from BC shows that the booster dose can prevent as much as 60% of infections with Omicron meaning that you are that much less likely to get it yourself or to pass it on to your family, coworkers or the residents and patients you care for.
  7. Available immediately for healthcare workers: All health care workers are eligible and prioritized to receive their booster dose now, as long as it has been six months since their second dose.
  8. Get boosted even if you’ve had COVID: Even if you’ve already had COVID-19, you should still get your booster dose as you remain vulnerable to future infections. Even if you’ve recovered from COVID-19 the infection may not have generated a robust immune response. The booster dose ensures you have a high level of protection that can last longer.

What is a booster dose?

A booster dose is an additional shot of vaccine that helps you maintain and lengthen your protection against severe outcomes of COVID-19 infections, including infections by various variants of concern.

Research shows that the initial vaccine series (two doses) protects you very well against severe disease for many months, but vaccine effectiveness does decrease over time. A booster gets your immunity back up to a desirable level of protection, ensures a longer-lasting protection and sometimes even completely prevents the infection.

Breakthrough infections among fully vaccinated individuals do happen because vaccines are not 100% effective against all symptomatic infections. However, the vast majority of these infections in fully vaccinated individuals are expected to be mild or even asymptomatic.

Hospitalizations, severe disease, and death from COVID-19 among the fully vaccinated are rare.
