Wear Red for Valentine’s Day

Let’s wear red on Valentine’s Day – February 14th

Roses are red
Violets are blue
Menno is blessed
Because of you!

On February 14th celebrate caring for each other by wearing red and enjoy some treats in all staff rooms. Sponsored by the Health and Wellness Committee.

What is your risk of COVID-19 Hospitalization?

Check out this chart that was created by the BC Ministry of Health – download the PDF Worksheet here.

How to use the chart:

1. Identify the number of risk-conditions that you have from this list:

At-Risk Conditions – Chronic Disease Dashboard (BCCDC.CA)
  • Cancer
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Cerebrovascular disease
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Chronic respiratory disease (eg: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, pulmonary hypertension, bronchiectasis)
  • Diabetes
  • Down syndrome
  • Hypertension
  • Immunosuppression and immunodeficiency
  • Obesity (BMI >30)
  • Organ transplant
  • Pregnancy
  • Sickle cell disease
  • Substance use (eg: injection drug use, problematic alcohol use)
  • Schizophrenia and psychotic disorders

Find more information on Risk Factors for Severe COVID-19 Disease: CLICK HERE

2. Find the appropriate cell on the chart that identifies:

  • # of risk conditions
  • your gender
  • your age
  • your number of vaccine doses

Examples:

A 55 year old woman with diabetes and 2 vaccinations has a 1.6% risk of COVID-19 hospitalization. If she were to get her booster shot, she would decrease her risk by 50% to 0.8%.

A 30 year old man living with substance abuse, hypertension and obesity (3 at-risk conditions) and zero vaccinations has a 25.2% risk of COVID-19 hospitalizations. He could reduce that risk to 3.6% with a full course of vaccinations (3 doses).

An 99 year old man with 3+ at-risk conditions and 0 doses of vaccine has an 83.7% risk of COVID-19 hospitalization. This could be reduced to 12.7% with a full course of vaccinations (3 doses).

Who is at greatest risk?

The highest risk for COVID-19 hospitalization is for the 80+ individuals who have 3+ at-risk conditions. This represents many of the people for whom we provide care at Menno Place.

Primrose Gardens is on Monitoring, a new status from Public Health. Our Manager, Community Enrichment, Trish Giesbrecht is on daily calls with Public Health and has set up following the protocols for infection control. The prevalence of COVID is so high in our community that Public Health is focusing their oversight efforts on locations that do not have the experience that our team brings. We are sorry to report that some cases of COVID are impacting residents more severely and another resident has gone to hospital. We are also initiating isolation precautions with 1 new symptomatic resident.

We want to thank our team of staff in Primrose Gardens who are doing the wellness checks. These phone calls and eyes-on checks have helped residents seek additional medical support in a timely way when needed.

Wearing N-95 masks when required by the Medical Health Officer (Hospital E1)

At this time, all staff who are working in Menno Hospital are required to wear an N-95 mask. Fitting is being done for all staff on this unit. If you have not had the FITT test, please contact your supervisor.

An N95 mask should be changed just as one would change a medical mask:

  • When soiled
  • After interaction with a positive resident
  • After breaks
  • N95s can be extended between negative & asymptomatic residents like medical masks.

The intention of the Medical Health Officer’s recommendation for N95s was for them to be worn whenever one is on E1 unit, not just in resident rooms.
