COVID-19 VACCINATION UPDATE – DEC 31, 2020

MENNO HOSPITAL

Today, a team of 8 immunizers arrived from Fraser Health and were able to vaccinate 141 residents in Menno Hospital with the first dose of Pfizer-BioNTecH. This morning on our call with the Fraser Health team, Dr. Ken Dueck, Medical Director for Menno Place expressed his great joy that this is happening here at Menno Place. There were 6 residents who were not vaccinated. There are 4 empty beds at this  time.

Many of you have asked on the Menno Place Families and Friends Facebook Group if this will change visits. This is certainly a necessary step in the right direction for getting back to the normal way that you were welcomed to visit your loved one. We are excited to anticipate that we are on our way to this happening.

The Best Christmas Present for 2020 – Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine for our Residents!

The Best Christmas Present for 2020 – Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine for our Residents!

We are beyond excited to let you know that Fraser Health called us this afternoon to let us know that all residents of Menno Home and Menno Hospital (long-term care) will be provided with the MODERNA COVID-19 vaccination.

We are working with our pharmacy, Rexall, to organize the details of storage and the team to provide the vaccinations. The great news is that this vaccine can be brought to our residents and they do not need to be moved off campus in order to get this vaccine (unlike the Pfizer vaccine that had to be stored at -70C).

All primary contacts will be contacted for consent for their loved one to receive the vaccine when it becomes available. All residents will be screened for allergies and sensitivities to ensure that there is not a contraindication for anyone. This vaccine has not, yet, been approved by Health Canada. It will arrive 24 – 48 hours after regulatory approval.

Menno Place will, with Fraser Health and other long-term care homes make our plans with the assumption that the Moderna vaccine will be made available.

As we move forward, we will advocate for all the seniors who live at Menno Place (Assisted Living and Independent Living) to qualify for this vaccine.

We continue to send our staff for vaccination with the Pfizer vaccine. We are sending 65 staff per day to the vaccination clinic. All staff who want the vaccine will get it. Please do not call Pearl Nucich – she’ll call you! Pearl, our Executive Assistant has done an exceptional job in pulling together this administrative task! You are eager to get vaccinated and bring this level of safety to your lives and to Menno Place residents – thank you. Sign up for the Vaccine – CLICK HERE

We are grateful. We are hopeful. We are so very thankful for your support of our residents and their families throughout this extraordinarily difficult pandemic. An end is in sight for our elders! We are so happy for the families!

We are so happy for YOU, Staff Team. This has been your finest hour. It really has – you have done what needed to be done and you have done it with heart and skill. We are so happy for you that you can be vaccinated and kept safe from this very dangerous virus.

Thank you from the MBS Board

To All Staff of Menno Place:

On behalf of the MBS Board of Directors, we would like to give you a huge “Thank you” and express our tremendous appreciation for your hard work and dedication to Menno Place, particularly in this time of a global pandemic. We couldn’t be prouder of your accomplishments in keeping our residents safe for the past 8-9 months, and for the grace with which you have been managing the current Covid-19 outbreak in the Home. You have all been giving your very best, pushing past your own fears, and rising to the occasion of truly being health care heroes.

Please know that our prayers are with you, for your own protection and safety, as much as for that of the residents for whom you care so faithfully and willingly every single day. We empathize with the anxiety many of you are feeling in these uncertain times, and the fear of this virus that sometimes threatens to overwhelm us.

We believe and trust in a loving God who is full of grace and mercy for each and every one of us, and who does not want us to be anxious or fearful.  We pray that these verses from Scripture might be an encouragement to you:

“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?  The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” Psalm 27:1

“I sought the Lord and He answered me and delivered me from all my fears.”  Psalm 34:4

“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock.” Isaiah 26:3-4

Finally, we wish you all a Merry Christmas and a joyful New Year!  May the Lord bless and keep you, may you find hope and peace in Him, may you and your loved ones have a safe and healthy holiday season.

With much gratitude,

Sylvia Robertson

Vice-Chair, MBS Board of Directors
