Memo – Menno Hospital Team Members – Staff Rooms and Lockers

Memo: June 20, 2023

To: Menno Hospital Team Members

Re: Staff Rooms and Lockers – Retuning to pre-COVID practice

Now that the pandemic is over, we are moving back to the staff rooms and locker rooms as they were before COVID. You are no longer required to have your break in a specific staff room unless your unit is on outbreak or required by your direction of your supervisor to cohort.

Fireside Café – the café (inside and out) will be a public space that can be used by families, residents, customers from ARH and elsewhere as well as staff.
We will have a grand re-opening in July.

Upstairs Staff Room
The staff room between W2 and E2 Hospital will be available to be used by any staff who work at Menno Hospital.

W1 Administrative Hall Staff Room
This staff room has a sink and fridge. Please use this staff room’s amenities if you need water to wash your dishes. There is also a TV and 2 computers for staff use. The staff room is available for all staff who work in the Hospital.

Lockers
Lockers are available for use during your shift (only). Please bring a padlock to secure your items and remove the padlock and personal items at the end of your shift. These lockers are for all staff to use. There are 2 locker rooms – one for women in the W1 Admin hallway and one for men across from the Maintenance shop.

What will happen during outbreak?
You will be advised of what to do for your breaks by your supervisor.

MEMO – HR CONSULTANT – Adrienne Alford

We are pleased to welcome Adrienne Alford to our Menno Place Team. She has joined us as an HR Consultant to support the Senior Leadership Team as we continue to recruit for a full-time HR Director. We are grateful that God led us to Adrienne as she has extensive experience in long-term care as Executive Director of both The Village in Langley and Arbutus Care Centre in Vancouver. Adrienne is a skilled leader whose passions include conflict resolution with a servant leadership approach.

Adrienne will be working out of the Director, Human Resources office, prioritizing the HR work that has come forward since mid-February. If you have HR concerns, please continue to bring them forward to your immediate supervisor.

We thank Kathrin McMath and Ron Willms for your leadership in covering the HR portfolio over the past two months. It has been critical and appreciated support for the Menno Place team during this time of transition.

If you meet Adrienne, please warmly welcome her to the Menno Place Team.

MEMO: Coverage When Working Short

Menno Place makes every effort to staff a full roster of care staff every shift.

At times, there may be a shortage of workers due to unexpected illness, last minute call ins or an injury.  To ensure the safety of the residents and staff who are working, the following practice is followed:

  1. Depending on the number of vacant beds, generally no unit should be more than one HCA short on a day or evening shift.
  2. All absent night shift care staff shifts are to be replaced.

The floor nurse is responsible to ensure that no staff member leaves their work area until a full roster of incoming staff is present.

Every effort is made to cover short shifts with casual staff, part-time staff or with overtime.  In the event this is not possible, care staff from the previous shift are required to stay to cover a vacant shift.

If no employee volunteers to stay in place the floor nurse has the responsibility to cover the shortage with the least senior employee on the unit. We understand that this can cause difficulty to an individual but resident care and staff safety are our priority.

Karen L. Biggs, CEO,

Menno Place
